Salad Bar San Diego: 2 More Main Types of Salad (2024)

In our previous post, we looked at some of the main types of salad. Today, we’ll continue that topic by covering the remaining two types — bound and farinaceous. While some people might think salads are not the most tempting food options, we beg to differ. Not only will we explain some of the differences between these two types of salads, but we’ll also offer some tasty ingredient options!

Bound Salads

Let’s jump right in! Bound salads are probably not the healthiest option in the land of salads, but they are so delicious! The reason they are a less-healthy option is that the binding agents are typically mayonnaise-based. Some of the most popular bound salads are egg and tuna. Most egg salad recipes are similar, which means that you can tweak the ingredients to your liking.

Classic Egg Salad

  • Eggs
  • Water
  • Mayonnaise
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Mustard
  • Paprika

Hard boil the eggs by placing them in a pan filled with cold water. Immediately remove from heat once the water comes to a boil. Cover the pan and let the eggs stand for 10-12 minutes. Take them out and allow them to cool.
Peel and chop the eggs and add them to a mixing bowl.
Add remaining ingredients, mix well, and enjoy.

While egg salad is delicious on its own, you can also make a sandwich out of it or place it on toast. Feel free to play around with the spices and herbs to find the flavor combination you like best.

Farinaceous Salads

Farinaceous salads are made with potatoes, pastas, or grains. If you’re trying to limit the number of carbs in your diet, then you might want to reserve this type of salad for special occasions.

Potato salads are fairly easy to make as well, they simply require a bit more time as the potatoes will need to be boiled. One tip is to make it on the weekend so that you can enjoy it during the week.

Classic Potato Salad

  • Potatoes, halved
  • Red onion
  • Celery
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Mayonnaise
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Spicy mustard
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Boil the potatoes until they are tender. The amount of time will depend on the number of servings that you’re preparing. Once tender, drain the water and allow them to completely cool.
Cut the potatoes into cubes, combine with onion, celery, relish, and eggs in a large mixing bowl.
In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper with a whisk until thoroughly blended.
Pour the dressing over the potato mixture until well-coated.

While you can definitely dive right in if you’re hungry, we recommend that you cover your salad and allow it to sit in the refrigerator overnight until well-chilled.
